Okay, so blogging is awesome.😁 But if you’re only writing posts and own a audience to sell to, you are leaving a lot of money on the table.
And this is because your email list is what pays the bills! Not views and definitely not ads.🚫
That’s why, if you want to turn your blog into a business (not just an online diary), you need to master the art of growing your email list with your blog to make that green. 💵
This guide is your roadmap! We’re going deep into strategies, tools, and proven ways to get readers off your blog and onto your email list. So you can build relationships, sell products, and create a steady income.
How does that sound? 👍
Why Your Blog Needs an Email List
Ahh Social Media! It’s amazing for visibility and growing an audience. However, one violation or “cyber zap” and your reach disappears.
Same with your blog. It gets traffic here and there, but most readers leave the site after one post. 😓
But an email list can be yours forever, and you will have the opportunity to market to your audience directly from the place they look at the most: their email!
So emails are a game-changer because:
- Direct access to your audience. You’re in their inbox, not fighting with TikTok trends.
- Build trust. Emails let you connect on a personal level (way more than a blog post alone).
- Drive sales. Whether it’s your own products, affiliate offers, or services, your email list is where conversions happen.
- Repeat traffic. Send out your latest post via email and receive an instant boost of readers.
So, if you’re blogging without growing your email list, you need to know the basics.
Step 1: Set Up the Basics (Don’t Skip This Part)
Before you can start growing your email list through blogging, you need the right foundation.
Pick an Email Service Provider (ESP)
This is where your emails live. Some great options for bloggers:
- ConvertKit (super popular for creators, great for automation).
- Mailchimp (Free and simple!)
- MailerLite (budget-friendly but powerful).
- Flodesk (beautiful designs, very visual).
- ActiveCampaign (advanced, if you love data. but annoying if starting out🙄).
Pick one that fits your style and budget. Don’t overthink it because what matters is starting.
Create Your First List
Set up your first email list (sometimes called an audience on the ESP). This is where all your blog subscribers will go.
Make your first email in the list all about your blog, who you are, and what you can offer to your readers. And don’t forget to tell them how often they should be hearing from you (very important). Don’t bug your people!
Overall, your welcome email is your first impression. Keep it simple: thank them, deliver any promised freebie, and tell them what to expect from you.
Step 2: Create Lead Magnets
Nobody joins a list just because you said “subscribe.” You need to give them a reason. That’s where lead magnets come in, and there are some good and bad ones depending on your niche.
A lead magnet is a free resource you offer in exchange for an email.
The key? It has to solve a specific problem your readers have and be something your readers want to have solved. 🔍
Now, here is the thing that no one is saying: All this s**t has been done before. And most people are tired of getting the same worthless freebies from other blogs in the past.
This is what is typical:
- Ebooks/Guides: “10 Easy Meal Plans for Busy Moms”
- Checklists: “Ultimate Blog Post Checklist”
- Templates: “Free Budget Spreadsheet Template”
- Printables: “Daily Planner for Productivity”
- Mini Courses: “5-Day Beginner’s Yoga Challenge”
- Quizzes: “What’s Your Blogging Superpower?” (Cheesy)
People are used to seeing these and they are not impressive anymore.
So to stand out: Make your freebie speak to the readers of today who want substance.
How do you do this? Make it connected to trendy topics of today, tech-connected if possible, and over-deliver like shorty about to make a purchase! 😍
Let’s see some examples for fun:
“10 Easy Meal Plans for Busy Moms”
✨Becomes: The Smart Meal-Prep App Pack — An interactive digital guide + auto-fill grocery list generator (in Notion or Airtable). Moms click through the plan they want, and it spits out a week’s grocery list they can send straight to Instacart or Walmart pickup.
“Ultimate Blog Post Checklist”
✨Becomes: The Blog Post Turbo-Launcher Toolkit — An AI-powered Trello/Notion board with a pre-loaded drag-and-drop workflow. Built-in timers to gamify writing (Pomodoro-style). Bonus: AI prompts embedded for each stage: headline, SEO keywords, call-to-action.
“5-Day Beginner’s Yoga Challenge”
✨Becomes: The AI Yoga Lab: 5 Days for Flexibility + Focus — Each day unlocks a short video + AI-powered feedback. Upload a pic or video. AI checks posture alignment and suggests tweaks. Bonus: Spotify integration with curated playlists for each yoga flow. Breathtimer and guided meditation included!
“What’s Your Blogging Superpower?”
✨Becomes: The AI-Powered Blogging Archetype Quiz — Not just a quiz, but a personalized blog launch kit. Results include a custom AI content calendar (auto-generated for your archetype). Bonus: Free Canva template pack tailored to the result (ie. visual blogger = mood boards, strategist = funnel maps).
Did you see the trick? Don’t give them just one thing and put “free” in front of it. Give them a system that solves the problem automatically, with tech baked in.
That’s what trending. And that is what makes it irresistible. 🤤
Step 3: Place Opt-In Forms Strategically
Once you’ve got that irresistible lead magnet, you need to get it in front of people. That’s where opt-in forms come in. You want to make your Opt-in Straight to the point and easy to opt in with awesome visuals.
Best Places to Add Email Opt-Ins on Your Blog from Best to Worst Effective:
- In your blog posts: Add them naturally in the middle or at the end. Most people scroll to the bottom of the post on mobile before going back up to read (Force of habit). So at the blog end is a really great place!
- Sidebar or footer: Great for visibility while they scroll. Especially for desktop users.
- Homepage banner: High visibility for first-time visitors. But, can get lost after that. So try the other places as well.
- Exit intent pop-up: Catches people before they leave. Works great for “Before you go” offers.
- Welcome pop-up → Love them or hate them. They of effective but not like they used to be. Readers are used to this type of marketing.
Do this: Don’t just say “Join my newsletter.” That’s boring. Instead, use copy like:
“Get the 5-step Checklist to boost your blog SEO in 30 days”
Step 4: Use Your Blog Content as a Magnet
Your blog posts themselves should be designed to grow your email list. Think of your blog posts as the “test content” you are sharing with readers to see what tickles their fancy the most. 🤗
You start by adding to existing blogs sentences that naturally lead into your lead magnet!
Write Content That Naturally Leads to Your Lead Magnet
If your top most engaging posts under the niche yoga is:
“5 Morning Stretches for More Energy”
“Why a Morning Routine Changes Everything”
Start thinking of freebies that you can provide based on these areas of your niche that address a pain point. (Utilize AI to think of awesome ideas too!)
Then, inside the post, offer the freebie as the next step. You can also do this method in reverse by creating a freebie based on a common pain point in your niche. Then, write 5-6 blog posts about the pain point and point them to your solution AKA Your Lead Magnet. 😁
Content Upgrade Strategy
This methods is advanced but powerful.
Remember, the examples above? Well, they all had a “bonus” attached to them. Well, to really “over-deliver” to your readers, give them 1-2 more bonuses with your freebie as a surprise until it hits their email.
This could be a thank you email, a bonus template, or mini-tutorial that they wasn’t even aware of getting! Surprise!!! 🤯
Yes, this takes some more time. and energy. But totally worth it in the long run.
Step 5: Write Blog Posts That Attract the Right Traffic
You can’t grow your email list blogging without the right kind of traffic.
So, that’s where keyword research comes in (yep, I have a post about it.)
Keyword research can help you with creating freebies based on. The questions people are asking in your niche on Google or Bing (Yes, they are still around)
So if your freebie is “Beginner’s Guide to Investing,” don’t link this freebie that talks about “Best Budgeting Tips.” Yes, they both deal with money. But one talks about ROI and the other is all about money management. Two different types of Readers.
So you write and link your freebies to posts such as :
- “How to Start Investing with $100”
- “Beginner Mistakes to Avoid in Investing”
That way, the people finding your blog are exactly the ones who’ll want your lead magnet. 👍
Step 6: Add CTAs That Pop
Nobody wakes up in the morning excited to “join a newsletter.”
If your call-to-action (CTA) is just a bland “Subscribe here” button in your sidebar, you’re going to hear crickets.
A strong CTA is what turns casual blog readers into email subscribers. It’s the difference between someone bouncing off your page or saying “Heck yes, I think I need this in my life.”
What Makes a CTA Irresistible?
A good CTA does three things:
- Tells the reader exactly what to do. (Clarity beats cleverness.)
- Explains the benefit. (Why should they click?)
- Creates urgency or excitement. (Make them feel like they’ll miss out if they don’t.)
Examples of Weak vs. Strong CTAs
- Weak: “Subscribe to my newsletter.”
- Strong: “Get my free 7-day productivity planner and finally take control of your mornings—download instantly.”
- Weak: “Join the list.”
- Strong: “Unlock the 5-step system 1,200+ moms are using to meal prep in half the time—grab it free today.”
See the difference? One feels like a chore, the other feels like an opportunity. Make people excited!
Where to Put Your CTAs in Blog Posts
The placement of your CTA matters as much as the wording. Don’t just slap it at the bottom and hope for the best.
- Top of Post: Great for readers who already know they want your freebie.
- Middle of Post: Perfect for catching people while they’re engaged with your content.
- End of Post: For the readers who finish your article and want the “next step.”
- In-line CTAs: A bold sentence or graphic within the text (“Want the full checklist? Grab it here free →”).
- Scroll-triggered pop-ups: Hate them, but this is. a strategy.
Do this: Use multiple CTAs per post in different formats. Some readers click text links, others prefer buttons or graphics. Track which are working and eliminate the rest.
Writing CTA Copy That Converts
Here’s a quick formula for crafting CTA text:
Action Word + Benefit + Urgency (This is what we find everywhere. And it actually works!)
Here are some examples:
- “Download your free SEO checklist now.”
- “Grab your 5-day meal plan before you forget.”
- “Start your free challenge today and see results by next week.”
Design Matters Too
Your CTA should stand out visually. Don’t let it blend into your blog design.
- Use contrasting colors for buttons.
- Add white space around it to make it pop.
- Use directional cues (arrows, images pointing toward the button).
- Mock-ups from Canva and other visuals matter too.
Test out what works and what doesn’t!
Step 7: Build Relationships with Your Subscribers
Once people join your list, the work is just getting started! Now, you’ve got to keep them engaged. 😍
What to Send:
- Weekly newsletters: Share tips, updates, or new blog posts.
- Exclusive content: Something they don’t get on the blog.
- Personal stories: Build trust and connection.
- Offers/products: When the timing feels right.
Remember: people join for the freebie but stay for you. Just be yourself in these blogs. Keep the voice consistent from blog to email freebie. And if you have Social Media, promote them to follow!
Step 8: Promote Your Blog to Grow Your List
Here’s the deal: you can have the best lead magnets, CTAs, and pop-ups in the world, but if nobody sees your blog, your list won’t grow. Promotion is just as important as creating content. 🤩
So I’m going to share a decent promostrategy you can use to jumpstart this process.
Top Blog Promotion Strategies
- Leverage Pinterest
- Still one of the best free traffic sources for bloggers.
- Create multiple pin designs for each blog post.
- Link them directly to posts with content upgrades.
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- Target long-tail keywords your audience is searching for. (Yes, a post about this too.)
- Learn to optimize your posts with headers, meta descriptions, internal and external links when possible.
- Traffic from Google is slow but steady. But those readers are high-intent.
- Social Media Sharing
- Share blog posts on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or TikTok—wherever your audience hangs out.
- Use shorts, carousels, and/or reels to drive traffic back to your post. Let’s start with 1 per day for new SM accounts to see massive growth!
- Guest Posting & Collaborations (Least Favorite)
- Write for other blogs in your niche and include a link to your lead magnet.
- Partner with influencers or fellow bloggers to cross-promote.
- Least favorite because I’m an introvert and have no interest in blogging on other sites. But please try! 😎
- Email Your Current List
- Yes, even if it’s tiny. Your email subscribers are more likely to share your content than random readers.
Repurposing for Promotion
Don’t just publish a blog post and walk away. Repurpose it into:
- Short-form social posts (quotes, carousels, reels).
- YouTube videos or mini-podcasts.
- Infographics that drive people back to the original blog.
The more places your content lives, the more chances people have to find your blog and subscribe.
Remember, not all traffic is created equal.
1,000 random visitors won’t grow your list as much as 100 highly targeted readers. Always ask: “Is this traffic source filled with my ideal subscribers?” If not, keep it moving.
So, don’t wait for people to stumble upon your blog. Put your content (and your lead magnets) where your audience is already hanging out. That’s how you turn a blog into an email list–building machine.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Let’s call out the pitfalls so you don’t waste time:
- Generic freebies. Nobody wants a “newsletter.” They want solutions. Well, depending on your audience.
- Burying your opt-ins. Don’t hide them. Make them visible and appealing.
- Neglecting your list. Don’t ghost your subscribers after they join. You don’t need to write long azz emails anymore. Keep it simple to the point and always redirect them to solutions.
- Overcomplicating it. One good freebie and one good form is better than 10 messy ones. Yes, bonuses are great. But if you are just starting out, no bonuses.
Conclusion

I hope you see how amazing and effective it can be to find a following and own your audience.
The formula is simple but powerful:
- Set up your email system.
- Create a juicy-azz lead magnet.
- Place opt-ins strategically.
- Write blog posts that attract the right readers.
- Promote, engage, and test.
- Rinse and repeat
When you focus on growing your email list blogging, you stop chasing pageviews and start building a real business.
So get started!
Pick one strategy from this guide and put it into action today. Your future subscribers (and future income) are waiting, Love.
